VIDEO: Precision-Guided Mortar Munitions smart weapons in Afghanistan

A mortar team has begun training on using Precision Guided Mortar Munitions rounds in Afghanistan that offer increased accuracy and reduce collateral damage. The increased precision of the system is compared to the switch from an M4 Carbine to a sniper rifle. Instead of firing numerous rounds to hit a target, only one shot is needed to destroy it. A forward observer from each mortar team checks to see what potential collateral damage could be harmed when the intended target is struck. They then communicate this information to the mortar operators and the new technology can more specifically avoid causing excess destruction.
