Patent Insights 8: The Elite Trademark Attorneys in 2024
In April, we released the fourth edition of the Trademark Intelligence Report, providing an in-depth analysis of trademark filing and registration trends. The report offers comprehensive data and metrics, covering the top 2,000 most active attorneys, law firms, and companies in the trademark landscape.
The chart below illustrates the dynamic landscape of U.S. trademark activity from 2019 through the first half of 2024. During this period, a total of 3,275,231 trademark applications were filed. Notably, 2020 saw a significant spike, with a 30.55% increase leading to a record 693,056 applications. Although 2021 experienced a slight decline of 1.36%, application numbers remained high. Our previous article attributed this surge primarily to increased activity from Chinese entities, reflecting their growing interest in securing trademarks. Our Trademark Intelligence Report also reveals a 22% increase in trademark abandonments from 2022 to 2023.
Additionally, a comparison of the first half of 2023 to the first half of 2024 shows a modest 2.11% increase in trademark applications. While not substantial, this uptick may indicate a stabilization in filings after the decline in 2022.
Our study identified a total of 32,484 attorneys actively involved in trademark prosecution. We have highlighted a selection of these professionals based on their significant activity or exceptional performance. Being recognized among the top 400 attorneys, representing the top one percent, is a notable achievement in this field.
