Patent Insights 9: Discover The Best Patent Prosecution Attorneys of 2024
The sixth edition of the Patent Intelligence Report, released in March this year, provides an in-depth analysis of the patent prosecution landscape, drawing from different datasets to generate a range of statistics. The report covers patent application types, technology centers, time to grant patents, filing and issuance trends, and activity within high-tech and biotech sectors. Moreover, our analysis highlights countries and corporations that are experiencing an upturn or downhill in patent filings globally.
As illustrated in the chart below, the number of issued patents has been declining, with an average annual decrease of 3.11% from 2019 to 2023. However, a different trend emerges when examining issued patents during the first half of the current year. Comparing H1 of 2024 to H1 of 2023, there is an increase of 12.92% in issued patents. It is essential to highlight the USPTO's Strategic Plan, which aims to reduce patent pendency and enhance application processing through hiring, training, and technology improvements. While these changes are crucial for long-term gains, they have temporarily slowed patent issuance. The impact of these optimizations may become evident in next year's report.
Over our study period, covering January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, we identified a total of 30,777 attorneys actively involved in patent prosecution. We have highlighted a selection of these professionals based on their significant activity or exceptional performance across distinct categories: overall, high-tech, and biotech. This assessment was based on over 20 different indicators, each weighted appropriately. Being recognized among the top 500 attorneys, representing the top 1.6 percent, is a notable achievement in this field.
