Microsoft Filed a Patent Application for Transparent Display

Microsoft last week filed a patent application for laptops and mobile devices that can actually project holographic images right before your eyes. The application claims a holographic optical element (HOE) where the projector and HOE may be configured to produce and magnify a virtual image that is perceived as being displayed at a large distance from the operator who views the image through the HOE. The new competition is shifting towards more efficient displays. Earlier Samsung introduced bendable phone screens and Google has been working on miniature displays with its Google Glass products. Rumors say that Apple is working on watches. The challenge for all these small devices is interaction with human (ways to input data or display them) which naturally means the next round of innovation will be in voice recognition and display technologies.
