Hitachi Rare Earth Patent Ends

The expiration of a 17 year old neodymium magnet patent held by Hitachi Metals Ltd (US 5,654,651 - CMOS static logic circuit) may open up the market and increase exports from China to the US. The end of the patent will pit at least seven producers, which formed an alliance to promote their products and fight Hitachi over other patents, against Hitachi and at least eight other companies who have paid for the rights to market and ship the patented magnet technology. This competition could cut prices of products used in Apple iPhones and Toyota hybrid electric vehicles.
