Biography
EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND Mr. Izumi graduated from the University of Tokyo, Dept. of Electrical Engineering in 1987. The focus of his research was a control of a motor. He joined Canon Inc. in 1987, and was engaged in developing PBX (Telephone Exchange System) from 1987-1991, during which time he became qualified as a first class wireless technologist of Japan in 1990. From 1991-1993, Mr. Izumi was a graduate student in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), mainly studying communication and coding theory. The focus of his research was the channel capacity of CDMA cellular systems. After obtaining his master’s degree from Caltech, he worked in developing wireless LAN technology (frequency hopping), mainly designing system architectures, for Canon Inc. from 1993-1998. He was engaged in developing FAX machines, including digital cordless telephones, from 1998-2006, and developing digital television technology from 2007-2008. Mr. Izumi joined RYUKA IP LAW FIRM in 2008, and is a Patent Attorney in Japan. He is experienced in drafting claims and specifications for various inventions as well as conducting patent searches in various fields including the field of semiconductors. He has also experienced drafting a Request of an Appeal for Invalidation. Mr. Izumi opened SOCO IP LAW FIRM in 2011. EXPERIENCE RELATED TO COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY When he was a graduate student, Mr. Izumi worked with Professor Robert J. McEliece to compare theoretical cellular phone system channel capacities of two kinds of spread-spectrum radio communication techniques. He mainly studied communication theory, coding theory, and information theory. After he obtained his master’s degree, he was engaged in developing 2.4GHz wireless LAN. Since IEEE802.11b had not yet been released, Mr. Izumi designed system architectures and synchronization circuits that made use of frequency hopping radio modules. He developed a prototype with his colleagues and evaluated its radio channel characteristics as a team leader. He studied the architecture of IEEE802.11b during that period. Mr. Izumi also developed commercial products, including a FAX machine that has functions of a digital cordless telephone and a wireless data communication adapter, and uses radio communication channels in the 1.9GHz band. He designed an ASIC to control the radio modules and to synchronize the wireless frames, and evaluated the characteristics of the radio aspects of the product with his colleagues as team leader. EXPERIENCE RELATED TO DIGITAL IMAGE/VIDEO PROCESSING While engaged in developing digital television technology for Canon, Inc. from 2007-2008, Mr. Izumi worked extensively with designing system architecture for JPEG image processing and AVCHD (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) video compression. He also has an extensive knowledge of digital TV systems architecture and MPEG-2 TS video compression technology. EXPERIENCE RELATED TO SEMICONDUCTORS Mr. Izumi is experienced in drafting claims and specifications for various inventions as well as conducting patent searches in the field of semiconductors. Recently, he has been engaged in representing clients who develop 3-5 group composite semiconductors. PRACTICE AREAS Patent Prosecution (Electronics, Data Communication, Radio Communication, Image Processing, Semiconductors), Patent Search, Invalidation RECENT PUBLICATIONS “Invention Bible for Researchers and Engineers” (Primary Author) Patents Mr. Izumi has 33 Japanese patents and 38 US patents. CERTIFICATIONS Patent Attorney Project Management Professional (PMP) Chief Telecommunication Engineer First-class Radio Engineer for On-The-Ground Services
