Biography
Mike Wu is Chief Technology Officer of an emerging tech startup company called Loupe. He received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Toronto, where, in collaboration with Baycrest hospital, he designed innovative technology with and for persons with severe amnesia. He has previously worked at IBM Research and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories. While his research touches on a broad range of topics, including mobile devices, novel interaction techniques, collaboration technologies, memory aids, and educational games, Mike is also interested in design techniques, empirical methods, and user studies. His research often seeks to understand the underlying psychological and social principles that govern human behaviour in order to better design compelling technology and fulfill unmet needs. He holds two patents and has published over a dozen academic papers and book chapters. Mike is an alumnus of two labs that specialize in human-computer interaction research: the Dynamic Graphics Project and Technologies for Aging Gracefully. During his graduate career, he was awarded major scholarships from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Province of Ontario. He is a fellow of Health Care, Technology, and Place, and has successfully completed the collaborative program in the Knowledge Media Design Institute. He is also affiliated with the Network for Effective Collaboration Technologies Through Advanced Research. Prior to his graduate studies, Mike spent time in a research lab at the University of British Columbia, developing education games to teach children math and science. He has also interned at Electronic Arts and Radical Entertainment, where he developed console games and built various tools for artists and programmers.
