About the Role

Patexia is building the most advanced AI-driven platform for IP insights, and we're looking for a Senior NLP/ML Engineer to lead our document intelligence and reasoning pipeline. This role combines traditional NLP/IE (information extraction) with document-level search, summarization, and legal drafting support.

You will help architect an intelligent layer over millions of legal documents to not only extract structured data but also generate insights and assist attorneys by preparing tailored legal content, such as drafts for IPR petitions. Your work will power an AI assistant that behaves like a smart paralegal — combining data extraction, case law context, judge behavior, and writing assistance.

Responsibilities

Design and implement NLP pipelines to:
- Extract structured fields from legal documents (e.g., PTAB, CAFC)
- Analyze and summarize document content to answer user questions
- Synthesize content across multiple cases to surface trends and arguments
Build RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines for multi-document responses using LLMs (e.g., GPT-4, Claude, or Gemini)
Create prompt-based or template-based legal content generation tools (e.g., draft petitions or responses based on extracted data and user inputs)
Integrate judge analytics, party behavior, and case metadata into reasoning pipelines
Work closely with engineering and product teams to shape data storage, model deployment, and legal content generation

Requirements

5+ years in Machine Learning/NLP with real-world production experience
Experience building multi-step NLP workflows with LLMs (e.g., RAG, summarization, prompt chaining)
Strong understanding of legal or technical documents and domain-specific NLP challenges
Hands-on experience with HuggingFace, LangChain, OpenAI APIs, or similar frameworks
Python proficiency and experience orchestrating pipelines (Airflow, Ray, etc.)
Familiarity with GCP (BigQuery, GCS, Cloud Functions)
Ability to lead architectural discussions and mentor engineers

Bonus (Nice to Have)

Prior experience with legal tech, IP litigation, or government filings
Familiarity with IPRs, PTAB, or USPTO databases
Experience designing annotation tools or data labeling pipelines
Ability to work in agile remote teams with product-driven iteration
