About the Role

Patexia is building a next-generation AI-powered platform for the legal and IP industry. Our goal is to develop an intelligent assistant (IP Agent) that can analyze structured data and legal documents to deliver actionable insights and assist attorneys in drafting content such as IPR petitions.

We’ve already brought onboard a strong ML/NLP engineer focused on backend modeling and document intelligence. Now, we’re looking for a Senior AI Application Engineer / Systems Architect to take ownership of how various AI agents work together and interact with the end user — from query understanding to response generation.

Responsibilities

Design and implement a multi-agent orchestration layer that routes natural language queries to the appropriate pipeline (e.g., SQL query agent, document search agent, drafting agent)
Build high-quality prompts, prompt chains, and context management strategies using tools like LangChain, LlamaIndex, or custom agents
Translate legal user intents into system actions: structured queries, document-based reasoning, or content generation
Work closely with frontend and backend teams to integrate LLM-driven features into the product
Optimize prompts, memory, and context length using schema pruning, semantic search, and embeddings
Define fallback strategies, error handling, and iterative refinement paths for ambiguous or multi-step queries
Contribute to product decisions and collaborate with leadership to shape roadmap, architecture, and feature priorities

Requirements

5+ years of engineering experience with at least 2+ in AI/LLM-based systems
Proven experience building and deploying prompt orchestration systems with LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI function calling, or similar
Strong command of LLM behavior, few-shot prompting, and output evaluation
Solid understanding of both structured data (SQL, BigQuery) and unstructured text processing
Experience integrating LLM outputs into frontend interfaces and data workflows
Product-minded and comfortable turning abstract use cases into usable interfaces
Strong Python skills; familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript and React integration is a plus

Bonus (Nice to Have)

Background in legal tech, compliance, or B2B AI products
Familiarity with RAG systems, vector databases, and embeddings
Experience with AI-based chat interfaces or knowledge assistants
Experience working with global, remote teams
