US and LDCs Agree to 17 Year Exemption from Pharmaceutical Patents

Earlier this week, the United States and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) at the World Trade Organization reached an agreement on a pharmaceutical patent exemption through 2033, which represents a period of 17 years. With the exemption, the world's poorest countries will not be obliged to "implement or apply" or "to enforce" patents as well as test data protection for pharmaceutical products.
