Every year, thousands of trademark professionals strengthen the identity of brands through diligent filing, prosecution, and protection of marks before the USPTO. Patexia’s Trademark Intelligence Report 2025 takes a data-driven look at this ecosystem, analyzing more than three million trademark applications filed between 2020 and 2024. The report highlights the attorneys and law firms leading the way in both activity and performance, those who not only manage high volumes of filings but also demonstrate exceptional success rates and efficiency in securing registrations for their clients.

Trademark Filing Trends (2020–2024)

Trademark filings at the USPTO showed notable year-over-year fluctuations over the past five years. Filings peaked in 2020 with 693,362 applications, followed by a slight decline of 1.31% to 684,275 in 2021. A larger drop occurred in 2022, with filings falling 19.42% to 551,367, and a further 1.06% decline in 2023 brought the total to 545,543. In 2024, filings rebounded by 9.39% to 596,791. Earlier fluctuations were largely driven by foreign activity, particularly from China, while recent USPTO measures to strengthen identity verification and representation requirements have helped reduce low-quality or fraudulent filings.

Top Two Percent: Most Active and Best-Performing Attorneys

Behind these filings are the attorneys who guide applicants through the USPTO process. Their expertise, strategy, and experience play a key role in turning applications into successful registrations. While overall filing numbers provide a picture of trademark activity, the performance of individual attorneys determines how efficiently and effectively brands secure protection.

Attorneys are evaluated not only by the number of applications they handle but also by their ability to navigate office actions, maintain high registration rates, and achieve approvals with minimal delays. The report’s methodology also adjusts for factors such as case complexity and examiner variation, offering a balanced comparison across firms and individuals.

Our analysis identified 31,618 attorneys actively engaged in trademark prosecution. From this group, we highlight a selection of professionals who stand out due to either their high level of activity or exceptional performance. Many of the top-ranked attorneys also represent international clients, reflecting the increasingly global nature of brand protection. Rising stars in the rankings further illustrate how specialization in certain industries or trademark classes can propel attorneys to the top of the field. Being recognized among the top 600 attorneys, representing the top two percent, is a significant accomplishment in the field.
