Mammography benefits women in their 40s
Women should begin to get mammograms in their 40s, according a new study published in the latest issue of American Journal of Roentgenology which explored the benefits of mammography for women aged 40 to 49. Of 108 breast cancer patients included in a retrospective chart review, patients who underwent routine screening mammography were diagnosed at earlier stages with smaller tumors, and high-risk lesions were detected, prompting chemoprevention and lowering breast cancer risk. "Annual screening mammograms starting at the age of 40 saves lives," says the study's senior author Donna Plecha. "Breast cancers caught in the initial stages by mammography are more likely to be cured and are less likely to require chemotherapy or as extensive surgery."
