For Qualcomm, China Settlement May Bring Global Scrutiny to Highly Profitable Patent Licensing Business

As China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) moves towards the conclusion of its 13-month investigation into Qualcomm, results are likely to force a change in how the company licenses its technology to handset makers in China. This could be a first step towards seriously weakening Qualcomm's extremely profitable technology-licensing business, not just in China, but globally as well. Analysts say that Qualcomm could face new pressure from regulators in other countries as well and Qualcomm itself has sugggested there may be links between the Chinese investigation and anti-trust probes in Europe and by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
