First electrocoat primer for aircraft introduced

PPG Industries’ aerospace coatings group has introduced AEROCRON, the first commercial electrocoat-application primer for aircraft. Primer is applied to metal aircraft structures to protect them from corrosion. While primer is typically sprayed onto metal parts, in the electrocoating process, metal parts are dipped into an electrically charged tank of primer. Electrocoat priming provides better corrosion protection than conventional spray primer because it enhances coverage. It also provides nearly 100-percent product utilization, reduces primer weight for enhanced aircraft fuel economy, and eliminates worker overspray exposure. The electrocoat priming process has previously been used for automotive parts, but this is its first application for aircraft.
