What is Patexia?

Founded in 2010 and based in Santa Monica, California, Patexia is a patent research platform powered by crowdsourcing. We enable our members to help us understand the value of a patent through our Contest platform, utilize their expertise as a consultant through Connect, keep up with the pulse of the intellectual property world in Community, and utilize our Research tools to bring efficiency and transparency to patents and patent litigation.

My Account

How do I edit my profile?

When you’re logged in, head to your Settings page from the drop-down menu in the top right hand corner. From there, you can change all of your profile’s settings.

Can I use a pseudonym on Patexia instead of my real name?

Of course! Your account is yours to control. While we would prefer you to use your real name, we can respect your desire for added privacy. Simply head to the your profile’s Settings page and change your First Name and Last Name to your desired pseudonym.

How do I change or unsubscribe what emails I receive?

When you’re logged in, head to your Setting’s Notifications page under the settings menu from the drop-down menu in the top right hand corner. From here, you can subscribe or unsubscribe from Patexia emails as you desire.

How do I change my password?

When you’re logged in, head to your Setting’s Password page under the settings menu from the drop-down menu in the top right hand corner. From here, you can change your password.

What if I forgot my password?

You can always use the password recovery option when you’re trying to login to reset your password. We’ll use your email address to confirm your identity.

How do I cancel my account?

We are sorry to see you go. Visit the Contact Us page and send us a message requesting your account be canceled.

 

Contest

I'm not from the US or Canada, can I participate?

Yup! People all around the world can participate.

Why do I only get one entry?

The strength of our Contest platform is that we go to you, the experts, to help us do patent research. We depend on your explanations. We allow one entry per user to help get a complete picture of your understanding.

Of course, you’re always allowed to provide multiple references with each submission. In some Contest types, that’s even preferred!

I accidentally submitted my reference. Can you guys help? Is there an undo button?

Absolutely! Email contest@patexia.com and we’ll be happy to reopen your submission. You’ll find your newly “Saved” submission waiting for you in your Dashboard.

It’s hours before the deadline and its the weekend. Are you guys still in the office?

You bet! When we know a deadline is coming, we make sure to pay extra attention to our inboxes. Email us at contest@patexia.com if we can help with anything.

Who judges the submissions? How are the submissions judged?

The submissions are evaluated by Patexia’s Case Research team based on the number of question criteria they answer, as well as the order of response and the thoroughness of explanation. More information can be found here at the Contest Rules.

How are the contest prizes shared?

Prizes are awarded according to the Contest type’s Contest Rules. In general, the majority goes to the winner, and the reminder will be split amongst qualified runners up.

When will I get paid?

We’ll make every effort to pay winners, runners up, and referrals within 60 days of the winner and runner up announcement date. However, in some case we are affected by processes we can’t control. Let us know via Contact Us page if you’re affected.  

Once the funds are available we will make every effort to transfer the money to you via PayPal.  However, if after 90 days we are unable to reach you for your payment information your prize will expire.

All payments are sent via the PayPal account information in your Setting’s Payment page. You can use the page to make sure you’re ready to get paid.

What are the benefits of joining the Patexia community?

As a member, you get access to news and information relevant to science, technology and innovation. You can showcase your work, follow your interests, voice your opinions on the latest papers and patents, and read the latest intellectual property news. There’s a lot of stuff out there to keep up, we’ll do our best to make sure the important stuff gets your attention.

What is my newsfeed?

This is the personalized listing of content that our server made, just for you! The newsfeed includes public posts from other members, recent news posted by Patexia, and posts made by members you follow.

Am I allowed to post? What can I share?

Of course! The Patexia staff will do our best to keep you up to date on the latest, but we sometimes miss stuff. If you’ve seen an amazing piece of news or want to see what your peers think about a particular piece of news, feel free to post!

Whether it’s about tech, patents, business, or intellectual property in general, we’d love it if you shared it with the Community.

 

Connect

Am I qualified to be a consultant?

We’re looking for part-time consultants with years of experience in their particular field from either academic research or hands-on industry experience, and sometimes even both. If that sounds like you, then you’re more than qualified!

What will the consulting work look like?

Our clients will be looking to you for advice, opinions, and expert testimony based on the expertise you’ve gathered over years in your field. The task at hand may include patent analysis, product review, or preparing a presentation.

I work/live in a city that is not where Patexia or the client is located. Can I apply and work remotely?

Absolutely. Our clients are comfortable to have their consultants telecommute. Any geographic restrictions (usually for time zone or legal reasons) will be listed in the Connect’s description.

Does the consulting opportunity cover travel expenses?

If our clients require you to travel, your travel expenses will be reimbursed as negotiated between all stakeholders in the project.

How do I check to make sure I don’t have a conflict of interest?

Please consult any current affiliations/employments and any non-disclosure, confidentiality, or non-compete agreements that you may have that are still in effect.

Due to confidentiality restrictions, all the information that can be shared at this time is posted in the Connect’s description. As the interview process continues, our clients will disclose more information. By the time you sign a consulting agreement, any questions you might have will be answered.

Is this a part-time or full-time consulting position?

All of our consulting positions are part-time. Our clients have set their work expectation with candidates who have full-time commitments in mind.

Research

What is Research?

Patexia has collected a database of over 4.1 million US patents granted since 1976 and every piece of patent litigation (read: lawsuit) since 2005.

In addition to search, registered users can use our advanced functions to create tailored queries and conduct visualized data analysis. Users can discover industry trends and compare companies’ patent portfolios.

Are Patexia’s Research tools free to use?

Absolutely. However, non-members cannot download any files and are limited to 5 queries a day. Sign up for a free member account to completely remove all limitations.

How do I use the Research tools?

On the Research page, you will see a menu located on the left with a Search Guide that will get you started down the right path.

How often is the Research database updated?

The patent database is updated every Tuesday (plus a one day processing delay) when the US Patent & Trademark Office releases its latest approved patents.

The patent litigation database is update nightly (plus a one day processing delay).

Can I search international patents?

At this time, the database only includes US patents.
